 Holiday Decorating Thanksgiving Tips:

Start with the first impressions: As your guests arrive, welcome them festively by decorating your patio/walkway/deck with hay, raffia leaves, pine cones, pumpkins, and any other festive fall items you can find. Go with this same theme on your front door with a handmade wreathe made up of Mother Nature’s gifts!

Bringing the outdoors in.....

Centerpiece: There is no rule book that states you must purchase an expensive centerpiece for the dinner table. Colored corn in the husk, squashes, gourds and acorns, topped off with candles and votives will give your table the perfect look for the season.

Table and wall decorations: Once again, Mother Nature has you covered in this department. Use leaves, branches, straw and other items to strewn across tables and walk way walls. The colorways accent the mood perfectly this time of year.

Last but not least: Accent your entire Thanksgiving home decorating efforts with fresh flowers. Go for rich reds, oranges, and yellows to accent the rest of the decorations. Remember that fruits and vegetables can also be used in conjunction with your other arrangements around the home.

Holiday Color Trends Can Brighten Up Your Christmas

Picture provide by Raz Imports
 Holiday Color Trends Can Brighten
Up Your Christmas

As I shop for holiday decorations for my clients, I am seeing beautiful greens, bronze browns and burnish silvers this year. Brighten up your Christmas color with a  subdued mix of frosty green and silver. These colors will appear in the Christmas windows of the biggest retailers this year. Any store window displaying bright reds and greens will suddenly seem dated. Think of two Christmas balls, one silver and one more of a metallic gray-green. Woody and other natural accents complement these shades beautifully. These hues are less garish, and most families are loving this color scheme for the holidays.

Christmas Metals: In keeping with the subdued hues of silver and frosty green, this year’s metal accents stick more closely to tin, pewter and burnished bronze rather than sparkling golds. The trend toward simplicity emerges in metal mesh pieces coated with uneven paints which renders an earthy texture, as well as the folklore-themed felts and tins. Even the glitters (popular again this year) lend more color than shine. The more sophisticated “superfine” is again the glitter of the day, and it’s showing up in plastic gift wrap and home décor in swirl and plaid patterns.

Red and green are the traditional colors of Christmas, but if purple is your favorite color why not decorate for Christmas with Purple instead? There are tons of purple Christmas decorations, so you could go with something like purple and silver Christmas Decorations instead of red and green.

Do I have to rush out for new Christmas decor? While you may not be ready for the white tree with purple ornaments, keep this year’s trends in mind while browsing your favorite store or online retailer. No need to trash all of last year’s stuff. A few new pieces can freshen your whole Christmas look. A trend does not make a mandate. Stores are happy to satisfy Christmas shoppers of all styles. So don't panic if you are lacking in holiday decorations, less is more and you can add just a few new decorations to keep up with the trend. Tip: glitter spray paints and color spray paints are a girl's best friend!

My Holiday Decorating Inspiration

 My Holiday Decorating Inspiration

"Dear Tonia,
Thank you for creating a beautiful tree and making our rooms feel so festive and comfortable. You took our old decorations and added a new twist! You are so creative, we could tell you love to decorate for the holidays. Sincere thanks for making our home special for us this holiday season!"  The Johnson Family

We all have fond memories of a special Christmas, one that makes you smile and your heart feel cozy. Here's a glimpse of how Innovative Interiors Holiday Decorating was created.

~ My passion....One cold December day in the beautiful NC mountains, another year of our family holiday Christmas traditions. We drive every year to the mountains in NC to spend the weekend shopping, spending time with family-creating memories and yes, scouting the mountain side for the "perfect" Christmas tree. Picture this....While sipping hot chocolate, singing Christmas carols with my family, and riding on a sleigh ride looking for our tree. I had a vision of helping others and decorating...a combination of two passions combined in one. So a passion turned into a holiday decorating career. The visions of lights, trees, ornaments, and garlands danced in my head.

Really, it's true...the passion for helping others and being creative all in one business, what more could you ask for?  As the owner and designer of Innovative Interiors Holiday decorating, the season to give hope, cheer, and holiday spirit is very important to me. To help others feel good about their surroundings...their home or business. Innovative solutions, being creative and thinking outside the box is what this company is about. Because Christmas is so special to me, I strive to make sure it reflects in the decorating we do for our clients during the holiday season. Each team member at Innovative Interiors Holiday Decorating shares the same passion and festive cheer to create beautiful rooms, events, trees and so on for our clients. Rather you want your home decorated or a business event...we listen to our clients, study your home to capture the vision you imagine your home to be during the holidays, and create a festive holiday event for all your guest to enjoy.

Living in the Greater Charlotte NC area it has been a delight to provide a holiday decorating service to my clients and new clients. Wishing you a beautiful and festive holiday! May your Christmas and New Year be filled with love, warm wishes, good health and prosperity. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Blessings and Smiles, Tonia Mosteller - Founder of Innovative Interiors Holiday Decorating Charlotte NC

How to Care for Your Christmas Tree

How to Care for Your Farm-Grown Fresh Christmas Tree

After Thanksgiving many of us in Charlotte NC, gather our families and head to the NC mountains for their traditional holiday Christmas tree.

My husband and I gather our family and we've been doing this for 22 years. Actually he's been doing this tradition with his family since he was a young boy. It's the most wonderful time of year for us, we love traveling to the mountains for the weekend to get our Christmas trees.

So if you are looking for the perfect Christmas tree and prefer a live tree instead of an artificial here are a few tips provided by National Christmas Tree Association. Enjoy!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
from our home to yours!

When a Christmas tree is cut, over half of its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your displayed trees. Below are a number of tips relating to the care of displayed trees:
  1. Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems.
  2. Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don't cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.
  3. Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go 6 to 8 hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don't bruise the cut surface or get it dirty.
  4. If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water.
  5. To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand.
  6. Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed.
  7. Keep displayed trees away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day.
  8. The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake.
  9. Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. With many stands, there can still be water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water.
  10. Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk does not improve water uptake.
  11. Use of lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, will reduce drying of the tree.
  12. Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set.
  13. Do not overload electrical circuits.
  14. Always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed.
  15. Monitor the tree for freshness. After Christmas or if the tree is dry, remove it from the house.
  16. Go to and type in your ZIP code to find a recycling program near you.
  17. Never burn any part of a Christmas tree in a wood stove or fireplace.
If you get a tree with roots attached, either in a pot or burlap, please read these suggestions:
  • The adaptability of the species should be considered. Many species are shipped outside of their natural area and may not be adaptable to other areas. Check with a reliable nursery or extension forester.
  • Keep in mind that Living Trees are VERY heavy and bulky. A six foot tall balled and burlapped tree will weigh as much as 250 pounds.
  • The tree should be stored in an unheated, sheltered area such as a garage or porch, out of the wind and sun. Do not expose the tree to freezing temperatures at any time.
  • The tree will need adequate water. The root ball or soil should be kept slightly damp but not flooded. Wrap the root ball of a balled tree in plastic or place in a tub while it is in the house.
  • Live trees may be decorated, but with care. If lights are used, they must not give off any heat.
  • Do not remove the tree directly from a warm house out into freezing temperatures. Instead, move to a sheltered area first for several days.
  • If the ground is unfrozen, the tree may be replanted. The spot to be dug should be mulched to prevent freezing. Plant as soon as possible.
  • Do not remove the burlap and strapping (unless it is plastic). This keeps the root ball solid and secure. In the instance of a plastic cover, cut the cord and roll down the plastic at least half way prior to planting. Tap the tree container of a potted tree and remove prior to planting. Do not attempt to remove soil from the root system. Earth removed from the original hole should be backfilled around the root ball. Mulch heavily over the top of the planted root ball to prevent it from freezing. Water only as needed: a flooded tree may not survive.
  • Stake the trees to prevent wind tipping or damage during the first growing season.

Decorating Homes For The Holidays Charlotte NC-SC

Home Decorating in Charlotte NC for the holidays.
During autumn, temperatures fall, days shorten and holidays are approaching, bringing the need to get our homes decorated for the holidays and get organized. Maybe this is why we associate the coming of the season with more family time and wool clothing, rugs, and upholstery keep us warm, as do sweater-knit throws. It's such a busy time of year for us all, we gather our menus, our guest list, Christmas list, mailing out Christmas cards, decorating our homes, shopping and make travel arrangements to celebrate the holidays with our family and friends.

We all know that fireplaces in a room is considered to be a focal point and is a wonderful place to decorate the mantels for the holiday season. A few decorative additions like the magnolia branches on the mantle and the subtle use of branch motifs help change this space from a well appointed room, to a favorably seasonal one. I mentioned in another post mother nature is great source to get decorating materials and is budget friendly because it is free (most of the time). Look at the picture above by adding pine branches, running cedar, green apples and pine-cones you transform this mantel to a beautiful and natural mantel for theholiday season without spending tons of money to decorate. Fire screens protect our homes from any stray embers that spark, and should complement the fireplace, both in style and in scale. A good quality leather chair is a bonus, but any chair that is snug and welcoming can be used, changing the current color to a seasonal hue is easy to do with slip-covers. Add a fluffy pillow and a soft throw into the mix, set it in front of a warm fireplace, and snooze your Sunday away. A cozy fire and soft textiles are essential to autumn nap taking especially after having your holiday feast.

Most people have fond childhood memories of making cookies and having hot chocolate with their parents or siblings during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, so it's no wonder we try in many different ways to recreate these feelings every year. Candles should have spicy or bakery style scents, and simple shapes, what a wonderful way to add a nice fragrance in your home for during the holiday season. Accessories can be as sleek or as artistic as your memories recall them to be, bring out your favorite past holiday family pictures and have them displayed through out your home. I like to add them under a glass table top (this could be a side table, dining table, entrance table or coffee table) displaying events from Thanksgiving through New Years, I make them all black and white matte and cluster them on the table top and gently place the glass top on them. This is a personal, family filled season, so don't let traditional design rules dictate all of your decisions, listen to your heart and create beautiful rooms that fit the lifestyle of your family. Most importantly create beautiful memories with your family and friends.

Holiday Decorating Can Be Easy And Budget Friendly!

Holiday Decorating can be easy and budget friendly!

Wreaths, mantel decor, garlands, and centerpieces set the stage
for your holiday haven from Halloween through Christmas.

Let's talk about decorating the fireplace mantel. The fireplace is central to many Christmas celebrations. For any number of homes, it’s the point of entry for Santa and so the mantle deserves very special treatment at this time of year.

To do so, begin by clearing it of its year-round objects. They will return in January but for now, the mantle should be bared so that you can fill it with Christmas cheer.

Swags and Lights

The most obvious choice for the mantle is to run a swag of greenery along the edge so that it loops down slightly. You can buy imitation mantle greenery that works very well. Some is festooned with holly berries or pine cones. Others are entwined with lights.

If you opt for the garlands with the lights, make sure there is a socket nearby so that you don’t have to string extension cords all over the living room.

*Make sure nothing flammable drapes too low from the mantle.

Bring Nature Inside

It’s also fun to gather boughs from evergreens growing in your own yard or ask a neighbor if you can have a few clippings.  Layer the boughs on the mantle, so that the ends are camouflaged. Be generous so that the greenery makes a statement.

Alternatively, put the greens in five or six small glass vases and line them up on the mantle. Flank them with white, red, or green candles. Decorate the greenery with small, bright Christmas ornaments.

Festive Colorful Balls and Candles...great combination!

Glass or crystal bowls filled with colorful glass Christmas balls are lovely. Intersperse them with tapers in glass and watch the “light show” when the candlelight bounces off the balls and glass bowls.

An array of colorful candles is another delightful way to decorate the mantle. These can be pillar candles in glass containers or set on pretty saucers, matched with tapers in candlesticks. Check out your local stores such as; Target, Family Dollar, Wal-Mart, Homegoods, and TJMaxx for some great buys on candles!

*Also flame-less candles are wonderful to use, you can find them unscented or scented. They are wonderful to work with because you can leave them unattended, and use them in decorations that you normally can't place real candles in.

Holiday Decorating with COLOR!

Decorating your homes with color during the holidays in NC - SC !
Holidays around the globe are celebrated in so many different ways and with a variety of traditions, decorating styles, and holiday colors that are unique to each country.  When choosing a color scheme for your home, whether it’s for the holidays or year-round, first decide on the mood you want to create.
Do you want to have an atmosphere that feels warm and inviting or would you prefer a soothing, elegant place to come home to after the chaos of holiday shopping? Look at your home decor and decorate your holidays based on your style and personality.

For a home that feels festive and inviting during the holidays, decorate with red, green, white, and gold. Bring in rustic decor with nostalgic vintage pieces such as a rusty red sleigh, or a cozy plaid flannel throw blanket. If you would rather have a traditional color scheme with an elegant touch, bring in gleaming gold ornaments, whites, sparkling strings of lights, and velvety rich-colored toss pillows. Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive, either. Visit local antique shops and discount stores,  or think about what you might have tucked away from your childhood that would work with the color scheme you’ve chosen and the mood you want to create.
Important, find one motif, color or theme and stick with it, Whatever motif you choose, “You must repeat, repeat, repeat,” A collection of too many ideas looks careless and cluttered. To create a balanced look, three is the magic number. If your theme is snowflakes, then put three snowflakes each on your wreath, in a floral arrangement, on the mailbox and on the wall. The consistency will tie your look together.

Whimsical elements are a great way to create a fun illusion. Mix and match real with fake, and it fools the eye. Keep your guests guessing by incorporating unexpected elements in your décor.
Your holiday theme can be a new twist on a traditional motif, or something you’ve never done before. Consider a variation on the traditional color scheme. Try lime green and raspberry, deep burgundy and sage green, or powder blue and silver. Ribbons, fabrics and ornaments in a new color scheme will give your holiday décor an updated look.

Christmas Tree Decorating For The Holidays

Adding a real Christmas tree to your decor this holiday season?
Decide Where to Place the Tree - Avoid placing your tree near a heat source (sunny windows, radiators, heating vents, and fireplaces). Try to keep the tree out of high traffic areas where it might be bumped or overturned, or where someone might trip on light cords.
Measure Twice - Before you go shopping or hunting for that "perfect tree," you'll need to decide where it will fit in your home. See placement tips above, but once a spot is chosen be sure to measure BOTH the ceiling height and the width of that space.  Also, measure your tree stand to determine the maximum diameter of the tree trunk you can use in it. Finally, measure the height of your tree stand as well as the height of your treetop decoration. Use all these measurements to determine the perfect height and width of the tree you'll select for your home. Don't forget to write them down and take them with you!
Take a Tape Measure - Take the tape measure with you when you shop. You'll need it to measure the trees you consider so you don't take home a 7" diameter tree trunk for your 5" diameter stand or a 9 foot tall tree if your ceilings are only 8 feet.
Before Leaving Home - Take heavy gloves to protect your hands, and a tape measure to help select the right size tree. Find an old blanket to protect your car from pine needles and sap. Taketwine or rope to tie it securely to the car (unless you know the tree lot will provide this). Locate a saw so a fresh cut can be made before placing the tree in water. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water so your tree can start drinking water as soon as it gets home and has a fresh cut. Find your tree stand (or determine if you'll need a new one) and set it up. Confirm the maximum tree trunk diameter that will fit into the stand.
Tree Stands - Choose a tree stand that is sturdy and the right size. Pay attention to the size of tree trunk that each stand will accommodate. The taller your tree, the bigger diameter of the trunk. If you have a tall, wide room, be sure to get a large stand for the large tree you'll select. If you'll put your tree on a table, a smaller stand will work fine. Look for tree stand models that hold lot of water. You'll spend less time refilling the water pan throughout the season. Get a stand that is easily adjustable so the tree can be leveled.
Choosing a Tree - Trees with shorter needles (such as Fraser or Noble Fir) are often easier to decorate than others, as they offer some space between branches for decorations as well as some stronger stems to hold heavier ornaments. Learn more about the many types of Christmas trees and find out the characteristics and uses of each type.
Space Between Branches - Keep in mind that a tree looks better when the ornaments hang straight. Many trees today are groomed to be lush and full, so aware that ornaments may hang at an angle on these sheered trees. For ornaments to hang straight you'll want a tree with some space between the branches. To test a tree, take an unbreakable ornament with you and hang it on several branches to see if there is room for it to hang straight.
Select a Fresh Tree - How can you tell if a tree is fresh? The needles should look shiny, green, and fresh -- not dry or brown. They should not fall off when you pull on a branch.
Transporting your Tree - If possible lay the tree inside your car or trunk for the drive home. This will be difficult unless you have a large van or truck. If you drive with the tree on the roof of your car, you must tie it securely to the car. You may want to wrap it in a tarp or old blanket.
Happy Holidays from our home to yours!
