Outdoor Holiday Decorating and Entertaining Ideas

Love Better Homes and Garden, found some great ideas we had to share with you on how to decorate your outdoors for the holidays and Christmas! Check out the pictures below and tips below from BHG for beautiful outdoors ideas that your guest and you are sure to enjoy this holiday season!

Evergreen-and-Cranberry Candle Ice Mold
A frozen ring of red-twig dogwood, evergreen cuttings, and cranberries warmly embrace a pillar candle. The tall glass holder lets the candle burn brightly -- and safely -- amid the branches. Use a flexible cake carrier to mold the icy arrangement.

Inviting Holiday Mailbox
Prepare a merry welcome at the curb -- a pretty swag of pine tied on with wire adds a flourish to your mailbox. Enhance it with red accents and pretty pinecones. The first snow will only enhance the look.

Holiday Bench Decor
Give a bench some holiday spirit with an arrangement of holiday greenery, pinecones, gazing balls, and ornaments. Spray the arrangement with a light dusting of fake snow for extra winter flair.

Tonia Mosteller a professional holiday decorator in Charlotte, NC...I adorn this bench and the natural elements from Mother Nature, with the eye catching glimmer from the silver ornaments. Well done, BHG...we love it!

Check out BHG for more holiday decorating tips and holiday decorating ideas for your home! I am always checking out their magazine and website for things that I can add in my own home and in my clients home for the holidays. Thanks BHG!

Planning a Holiday Party or Holiday Event? Call a Professional Holiday Decorator to help decorate for your special occasion.

Christmas and the holidays is a favorite time of the year for me and a lot of people. It’s time when they can decorate their homes to impress their families and friends. Nobody will forget about decorating their Christmas tree, mantle, the stairwell and even the yard.

A tablescape is more than just a centerpiece. Tablescapes dress up the dining table, sideboard, coffee table, or just about any other surface in your home as well as its surroundings. They use carefully chosen items and elements that work together to create a beautifully harmonious design. Although it’s easy to miss that the Christmas table should also be decorated. Of course, it will be full of delicious food and yummy deserts but dining in style is always better. There are plenty of things to consider when it comes to decorating the Christmas table for the holidays. You should make some centerpieces, place cards, candle decorations and many other things. Although all these decorations worth the spent time because they could really help make the Christmas day, Holiday parties, and events even more memorable.

Caring For A Fresh Christmas Tree In North Carolina

How to Care for Your Farm-Grown Fresh Christmas Tree

After Thanksgiving many of us in Charlotte NC, gather our families and head to the NC mountains for their traditional holiday Christmas tree.

My husband and I gather our family and we've been traveling to the mountains to get our fresh tree for 24 years. Actually he's been doing this tradition with his family since he was a young boy. It's the most wonderful time of year for us, we love traveling to the mountains for the weekend to get our Christmas trees.

So if you are looking for the perfect Christmas tree and prefer a live tree instead of an artificial here are a few tips provided by National Christmas Tree Association. Enjoy!

When a Christmas tree is cut, over half of its weight is water. With proper care, you can maintain the quality of your displayed trees. Below are a number of tips relating to the care of displayed trees:
  1. Displaying trees in water in a traditional reservoir type stand is the most effective way of maintaining their freshness and minimizing needle loss problems.
  2. Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don't cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.
  3. Once home, place the tree in water as soon as possible. Most species can go 6 to 8 hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water. Don't bruise the cut surface or get it dirty.
  4. If needed, trees can be temporarily stored for several days in a cool location. Place the freshly cut trunk in a bucket that is kept full of water.
  5. To display the trees indoors, use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. As a general rule, stands should provide 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter. Devices are available that help maintain a constant water level in the stand.
  6. Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed.
  7. Keep displayed trees away from sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day.
  8. The temperature of the water used to fill the stand is not important and does not affect water uptake.
  9. Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. With many stands, there can still be water in the stand even though the base of the tree is no longer submerged in water.
  10. Drilling a hole in the base of the trunk does not improve water uptake.
  11. Use of lights that produce low heat, such as miniature lights, will reduce drying of the tree.
  12. Always inspect light sets prior to placing them on the tree. If worn, replace with a new set.
  13. Do not overload electrical circuits.
  14. Always turn off the tree lights when leaving the house or when going to bed.
  15. Monitor the tree for freshness. After Christmas or if the tree is dry, remove it from the house.
  16. Go to www.realchristmastrees.org and type in your ZIP code to find a recycling program near you.
  17. Never burn any part of a Christmas tree in a wood stove or fireplace.
If you get a tree with roots attached, either in a pot or burlap, please read these suggestions:
  • The adaptability of the species should be considered. Many species are shipped outside of their natural area and may not be adaptable to other areas. Check with a reliable nursery or extension forester.
  • Keep in mind that Living Trees are VERY heavy and bulky. A six foot tall balled and burlapped tree will weigh as much as 250 pounds.
  • The tree should be stored in an unheated, sheltered area such as a garage or porch, out of the wind and sun. Do not expose the tree to freezing temperatures at any time.
  • The tree will need adequate water. The root ball or soil should be kept slightly damp but not flooded. Wrap the root ball of a balled tree in plastic or place in a tub while it is in the house.
  • Live trees may be decorated, but with care. If lights are used, they must not give off any heat.
  • Do not remove the tree directly from a warm house out into freezing temperatures. Instead, move to a sheltered area first for several days.
  • If the ground is unfrozen, the tree may be replanted. The spot to be dug should be mulched to prevent freezing. Plant as soon as possible.
  • Do not remove the burlap and strapping (unless it is plastic). This keeps the root ball solid and secure. In the instance of a plastic cover, cut the cord and roll down the plastic at least half way prior to planting. Tap the tree container of a potted tree and remove prior to planting. Do not attempt to remove soil from the root system. Earth removed from the original hole should be back filled around the root ball. Mulch heavily over the top of the planted root ball to prevent it from freezing. Water only as needed: a flooded tree may not survive.
  • Stake the trees to prevent wind tipping or damage during the first growing season.
Enjoy creating memories with your family this Christmas holiday as you look for the perfect fresh Christmas tree in North Carolina.

Holiday-Christmas Decorating Biltmore House & The Grove Park Inn- Asheville NC

Who doesn't enjoy the beautiful estate of the Biltmore House especially during the holidays? With all the glorious Christmas trees, lights, and decorations! My family and I have been going for years to enjoy the beauty of the grounds and gorgeous house! Have you ever dreamed of living there? I have a dream, one day to help decorating the amazing Biltmore House for the Christmas holidays. The Fall months and Christmas are favorites of mine! Although I do adore the Spring time there as well. Okay, I love all the seasons there!

With that said, Christmas is truly my favorite, because Christmas and Holiday decorating are a true passion of mine. From early childhood memories to creating memories at the Biltmore House with family and friends when we visit during the holidays. This magnificent estate captures a beautiful meaning of the holidays.

These photos I captured last year while visiting the Biltmore House with my husband and son, as many times as I've been throughout the years....every time I go feels like the first time....especially at Christmas! I ADORE the Christmas trees and the feeling you get stepping onto the grounds of this glorious place. The history captured from years past, the house and grounds pull you into "once upon a time" feelings.

I have a dream...to one day help decorate trees at Biltmore House for the holidays! Well, two dreams....I have another dream to help decorate trees at The Grove Park Inn. Another FAVORITE place of mine in Asheville, NC. My family and I have stayed a few times in this historic location. The creative and beautiful Gingerbread houses on display are a must to see when you visit. Plus the views sitting out on the terrace and the spa...oh yes, a must do!

Yes I love this place too!

Okay, I admit it...I love beautiful places, I love Christmas and Holiday decorating

Happy Holidays from my family to yours!
May the beauty of the Christmas holiday shine bright and bring joy to all.

Founder and owner Tonia Mosteller of Innovative Interiors –Holiday Decorating shares with us the passion she has for decorating homes and businesses for the holiday season and Christmas.

"Holiday decorating is a passion and great love of mine. Since I was 5 years old; my mom would find me snuggled up in my bed with paper and color pencils; drawing family rooms with Christmas trees, garlands, and stockings hung from a crackling fireplace, and of course milk & cookies for Santa. Grew up with wonderful holiday memories and traditions that I will always cherish. And now many of those traditions I share with my own family, plus my husband and I have created some wonderful new traditions that we share with our families.  Because of the passion and love for decorating, the smiles I bring to others when they see their holiday decorations transform...it's truly warms my heart and soul. Those moments are priceless for me. I cherish the relationships I build with each of my clients, and it's a blessing to decorate their homes or business for the holidays."

"Specials thanks to all of our holiday clients! Thank you for your continued business. We are forever grateful for each of you.  We appreciate allowing us to be creative and decorate your rooms and trees!"

Happy Holidays from our home to yours!

Holiday Decorating -Thanksgiving Tables

Decorating Thanksgiving Tables

Gather your family and friends for a Thanksgiving feast this holiday season. Here are some great decorating table settings and centerpiece ideas to dress up your table from CountryLiving.com. Thanks Country Living for these beautiful photos and great useful tips on how to dress up and decorate our dining room tables for Thanksgiving.

Photo Centerpiece
Photo Display: Before the holiday, invite your guests to send you copies of family photos that you can then spray-mount to card stock. To age contemporary color digital photos, print them in sepia.

Pear Place card: At each place setting, set out a Bartlett pear. From cream-colored card stock or manila file folders, cut out strips and write guests' names in gold or brown ink. Affix each with a ball-head sewing pin.

Candle Tray: A collection of brass candlesticks in varying heights also provides visual interest. The placement of the photos, which are nestled in a tray of nuts, is varied, too. Keep the candles the same length.

 Exquisite Table Dishes:
Family china may steer the table's theme, but introducing a few simple, con-temporary pieces can create an entirely new look that is as personal as it is inviting.

Table: Favorite items like colorful linen napkins or a family heirloom can inspire the overall look. Employ a sideboard to keep plates and glassware handy for the second course and the dining table uncluttered. Serving a sumptuous Thanksgiving feast can be an exciting prospect, especially when the entertaining is fuss-free. All it takes is a little planning and recipes that are delicious and simple to prepare. You too can host an unforgettable Thanksgiving.

Dessert Table (Oh yes, we must all have a dessert table for our Thanksgiving feast). Just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without some homemade pumpkin pies. ;)

This holiday, expand your entertaining space and move part of the party out of the dining room.

Step 1: Rethink your surfaces. Clear a side table or desktop in another room to create a cocktail bar or dessert station.

Step 2: Vary the height and size of your serving pieces. Incorporate footed compotes, trifle bowls, cake stands, and stacks of dessert plates to add dimension and visual interest to your entertaining surface.

Step 3: Corral your ice bucket, glassware, and libations on a tray that can be easily removed when coffee and tea are served.

Step 4: Mix and match your favorite china and glassware collections at the dessert station. Don't worry about continuing the theme you create on your main table.

Child's Play (When weather permits create a great outdoor dining setting for kids to enjoy on Thanksgiving and if mother nature is not on your side, then move it indoors.)

We all fondly recall holidays spent at the kids' table, joking with cousins and passing vegetables to the dog when no one was looking. To create special memories for the next generation, forgo the boring card table in favor of a fun, kid-friendly setup. In good weather, set the table outdoors (within your sight, of course), and offer plenty of treats and activities to keep boredom and squabbles at bay.

SETTING THE KIDS' TABLE

Giving Tree: Have the kids write down what they're thankful for this year on stamped tags, then tie to branches of fall foliage. Vase: Villeroy & Boch.

Sweet Treats: Thanksgiving-themed chocolate turkeys and lollipops make winning favors for tots. Glasses: AOH Design. Chocolate: Bissinger's.

Fun for All: Fill gift bags with rubber stamps and pads, then lay parchment paper on the table so the kids can play. Table: Pottery Barn Kids.

This was a very popular post, and therefore it deserves to be reposted again for viewers that have not seen it. Thanks to our viewers for enjoying what we post for the holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving from our home in Charlotte, NC to your home where ever it may be.

Fall Into Holiday Decorating

Outdoor Fall Decorating Ideas

Outdoor Fall Decorating Ideas!
As a professional Holiday - Seasonal Event Decorator of Charlotte, NC I am thrilled the seasons are changing!

Welcome Autumn! When glorious colors from the beauty our trees comes alive to display abundance fall color. Mother Nature's decorates our land with colors of yellows, reds, greens, golds, purples, and oranges. It's the perfect time to decorate your home indoors and outdoors for the upcoming season. From the holidays of Halloween to Thanksgiving, no better time to show off your personality and add color and spice up your home! Below are some great ideas from BHG on how to add some fall color to your outdoor spaces!

The key for outdoor decorations is to include different elements in outdoor decorating . Apples, pinecones, evergreens, and so on. Look at each season from spring, summer, fall, and winter...each season brings color and natural elements from the outdoors to decorate until your heart is content.

Fall Squash and Foilage

Mix bright orange squash with earthy pottery for an autumn hued display. Fill the vase with beautiful crab apple branches for their ripe apples and lush leaves.

Creative Pumpkin Arrangment

Display hollowed-out pumpkins filled with potted fall flowers along a retaining wall. A procession of pumpkins would also look stately on your front steps.

Fall Festive Lights

Adapt Christmas lights for the Halloween and Thanksgiving season. Position sturdy bare branches in a pot half filled with small rocks or potting soil. Fill in the top of the pot with gourds and pumpkins. Wrap strands of lights (white lights or specialty outdoor party lights) around the bare branches.

Fall flower Bouquet

Fall flower Bouquet

Scour antique stores and flea markets for a tall and tapered, galvanized steel container with a handle. Fill with fall flowers and hang by the handle from a hook on your front door.

Potted Pumpkin

Potted Pumpkin

Turn an old planter into a pumpkin perch for fall. Hot-glue corn husks to a straw wreath form, along the top, bottoms, and sides so that the ends of the husks all point outward. Stick sprigs of ornamental grass into the wreath form to fill in any gaps. Set the wreath on top of a garden urn and nestle a pumpkin in the wreath.

Pumpkins Path

Add some pizzazz to your front yard by lining a walkway with pumpkins. Around Halloween, replace some of the whole pumpkins with carved jack-o'-lanterns.

Fall Backyard Porch Decor

Add a string of decorative outdoor lights to your porch railing to illuminate the night.

Windowsill Fall Decorations

Windowsill Fall Decorations

Dress up blank windowsills with an arrangement of harvest-inspired elements such as miniature hay bales, ears of Indian corn, and leaves. For Halloween, add a miniature jack-o'-lantern or two. For Thanksgiving, add a handful of pinecones.
